The Government Core Services Review in 2001 deter- mined that the Ministry of Forests should no longer maintain and manage recreation sites and trails and that the existing program should end by march 31, 2004. However, under effective public pressure, the government reversed that decision and now continues with the Forest Recreation Program. The Ministry negotiated agreements with community groups and private operators to manage and maintain many of its 1,300 recreation sites and 500-odd trails. |
